HLN's first game show is like Google Feud meets 'Jeopardy'

HLN is transforming a mobile app that lets players test their Internet keyword knowledge into the channel's first-ever game show.

Google Feud is one of the Internet's favorite things right now, so HLN figured people were ready to use their Internet-searching knowledge to win prizes. While Google Feud works with search suggestion data, the Keywords app, which HLN launched in January, asks users to identify a search term based on five of the keywords used to find that term online.

The new Keywords TV show, hosted by Olympic gold-medal swimmer Summer Sander, culminates with the winning team reversing the formula and guessing at least five keywords for a provided search term.

Keywords premieres March 31 at 10 pm EST on HLN.

Zach Galifianakis and Kristen Wiig are the worst bank robbers ever in 'Masterminds'

Your prayers have been answered; your vision board was a success: Zach Galifianakis and Kristen Wiig are in a movie together.

The first trailer for Masterminds, directed by Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess, is making the rounds, and the film stars Galifianakis as a Loomis Fargo armored truck employee who plans and carries out a bank robbery. The film is based on a real robbery that took place in Charlotte, N.C., in 1997. Galifianakis plays David Scott Ghantt, who walked away with $17 million before getting nabbed in Mexico. Wiig plays a fellow coworker who helped plan the heist. Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis also star, the wardrobe is wonderfully ’90s, and Galifianakis’s hair is on point.

The film opens Aug. 7.

Comedy Central defends Trevor Noah, calls judgment based on tweets 'unfair'

In the span of a day, newly announced Daily Show host Trevor Noah experienced both the highs and the lows of being thrust into the national spotlight. Noah's post-announcement honeymoon period ended quickly when the Internet discovered offensive tweets from his past, but Comedy Central has stepped in to say it's standing by him.

The channel's PR Twitter account issued the following statement on Tuesday afternoon.

Many were upset by what were seen as anti-Semitic tweets, as well as jokes about punching and body-shaming women. The Internet's lightning-fast cycle of insta-judgement ginned up outrage and counter-outrage from Noah's critics and defenders; suddenly, everyone became an expert on joke-telling and satire.

Some people pointed out the ethical murkiness of judging others based on years-old tweets.

Ari Shaffir, another Comedy Central personality, also came under fire this week for body-shaming a fellow comedian during a nationally televised stand-up set. The network has not yet commented on that incident. It was around this time last year that Stephen Colbertfaced the Internet mob for an out-of-context tweet about Asians.

At press time, Noah had not yet commented on the fallout.

NitFlux is the New Zealand-based Netflix parody we wish were real

Back in November, Netflixannounced plans to launch its streaming service in Australia and New Zealand in March (which, looking at he calender, should be right about now). But New Zealanders don't need Netflix to come in and show them how steaming is done—they've launched their very own service, NitFlux.

NitFlux is already looking to be a strong competitor: For only $66 a week, you can fax in your application (to be approved by the prime minister) and have access to the service's streaming database, which includes over six (read: seven) videotapes.

The Twitter media campaign is already revving up to take New Zealand by storm:

You can also go ahead and sign up to receive details on a NitFlux T-shirt, which will be sent to you whenever they're available to ship. So look out, Netflix! You've got some stiff competition out there.

Vine heads to the big screen in 'FML'

Jason Nash is the “old guy” on Vine, and he's just fine with that, thanks. Now, he’s parlaying his success on the platform into a movie.

Nash, who has more than 1 million followers on Vine, just launched a Kickstarter for FML: A Social Media Adventure, which is set to feature him and fellow Vine personality Brandon Calvillo, as well as Nicholas MegalisPatton Oswalt, Silicon Valley’s T.J. Miller, and Cougar Town’s Busy Phillips, among many others. Nash and Calvillo (who has more than 4 million followers) star as friends separated by two decades in age, who decide to take a road trip and amplify their respective social media followings. While it’s not a documentary, their friendship did start on Vine, when Nash was trying to promote another movie, 2014’s Jason Nash Is Married.

“He was the comedy partner I’d been waiting to meet my whole life,” Nash says of Calvillo. “But he was 20 and I’m 40, and so I would drive down there and do vines with him and drive back to my family. And we just had this really good relationship; he was a kid who worked at Gamestop and lived with his mom and was really trying to figure out life. I have a wife and some kids and was in the middle of a mid-life crisis. So I thought, ‘This would be a good area for a movie.' Two generations meeting on social media.”

Nash says the movie’s foundation is their friendship, but FML is also about the power of social media to bring people together, as well as our collective thirst for instant feedback and “likes.”

“It’s a satire,” Nash explained. “It’s about all of us. If someone posts something on Facebook and it gets two likes, they get all down. It’s all about how the phone is making us all go inward and create this world of just us. Overall it’s about the good, but it pokes fun at the idea of, ‘Hey, look at me, I’m taking a picture on Instagram and it has 40,000 likes.’”

Nash and Calvillo aren’t the first six-second personalities to make the feature-film or TV leap: Rainn Wilson’s Hollywood and Vine series is in production, and teen scream elicitor Cameron Dallaslanded his own movie. Nash is looking to raise $200,000 to fund the film, which is expected to debut at the end of the year.

With vines, he says, “every little bit counts, because you’re going to be watching it 100 times, and each time you watch it you see something new.” It’ll be interesting to see how that transitions to a feature film.

Ron Lit will do the impossible: Make you want to read the classics

The Daily Dot is celebrating Woman Crush Wednesday, better known as #WCW on Twitter and Instagram, by highlighting female creators on YouTube whose work we admire.

Allow me to fangirl for a minute. As a woman who always carries a book in her purse and named her cats Fitzgerald and Hemingway (neither cats are alcoholics, for the record), creator Ron Lit is one of my YouTube heroes.

A major influencer among YouTube’s BookTube community, Ron (short for Veronica) releases a new video every Thursday that explores the world of literature, in her own hilarious, off the wall way. Her channel library include book tags, literary theory, book reviews, Jane Austen fangirling moments, book hauls, discussions, and musing about how classical literature has shaped our world today. In short, Ron is the English teacher you wish you had growing up.

An English doctoral student, Ron originally started her YouTube channel after months of persuasion from her sister Shannon, who shoots and edits all of the channel’s videos. In the two years since the channel went live, the two sisters have gained close to 10,000 subscribers and started major discussions with viewers around the portrayal of race, gender, and sexuality in literature. But unlike your 10th grade English teacher, Ron generates discussions in her own hilarious way: “I wanted to curl up and die, it was so racist,” she says of one subject, and Jane Austen is “a fucking baller.” And on top of that, she loves cats and wine?! It’s almost too much for my bibliophilic heart to bear.

Much like the education channel Thug Notes, Ron breaks down classic literature and complex literary theory in a way that is accessible and enjoyable for the viewer. Every time I watch her videos, I always find myself scribbling her book and comic recommendations all over my notebook in an attempt to keep up with her unquenchable appetite for reading.

In one of her most popular videos, “Women in Detective Fiction,” Ron explains the evolution of female characters in detective novels and leaves the viewers to question why Arthur Conan Doyle’s representation Irene Adler from over 100 years ago is somehow more progressive than her character in today’s popular Sherlock series. Ron’s made book lists inspired by Jeff Goldblum movies and Britney Spears’ life phases, she’s explained the literary theory surrounding the grammar in Mean Girls, and she has proved countless times why Jane Austen is a feminist writer we should all be paying more attention to. And her badass literary boss ways are only going to continue as she ventures into the world of scripted narrative content.

Ron recently released the trailer for her upcoming webseries Adulthood and Other Lies. The series will follow the life of a Ph.D. student and her misadventures through the world of books, sleep deprivation, books, endless writing, crushes on girls, wine, more books, crushes on boys, all the wine, etc.

While she’s best known for her videos on literature, Ron has also used her channel to talk openly about her past struggles with eating disorders and her road to recovery. In past interviews, Ron has shared that it’s her passion to spread body positivity and provide resources and support for others battling her same disease.

A future English professor, vocal advocate for body positivity, and hilarious bibliophile, Ron is one of the most worthwhile people on the platform. So go subscribe! Your bookcase will thank you later.

Jimmy Fallon got puppies to predict who will win March Madness

Filling out your March Madness bracket takes some knowledge of college basketball, but let’s be honest, it also takes a great deal of luck.

As we've seen many times in the past few weeks, anything can happen on the court. By the time we get to the Final Four, only the sports gurus and the people who will openly admit not knowing what they're doing still have good brackets. You might as well have small children or animals pick the outcome.

And that’s what Jimmy Fallon did on The Tonight Show. To test his puppy predictors, Fallon set out four bowls of kibble marked with Kentucky, Wisconsin, Michigan State. The team with the bowl that received the most canine attention, he reasoned, would be the winner.

If the puppies do get it right, all of college basketball might collectively lose it.

Conan brought on a 'gay agenda' expert to defend Indiana's controversial law

In light of the controversy surrounding Indiana’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a self-appointed “Religious Freedom Czar” has come to the law's defense, explaining that it's not actually about discrimination against the LGBTQ community.

The czar, played by Archer’s Chris Parnell, issued his resounding defense on Conan, saying he stood with Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) and other conservatives who had shown their support for the law. In reality, the czar told Conan O'Brien, it was about preventing discrimination against “good, church-going folks who just want their businesses homosexual free.”

Netflix urges you to binge responsibly this April Fools'

$

Netflix may have basically become a way of life for most of us, but the company wants you to also remember the more important parts of life.

If you watch more than two episodes of a TV show on Netflix in a row in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., or Ireland, you’ll be greeted with a PSA-like video featuring a star from one of Netflix’s many series.

They all just want to know if you’re OK. You’ve been watching Netflix far too long, and you should go do something productive before you come back to your show. Orange Is the New Black’s Taylor Schillingreminds you that you have real friends outside of your Netflix friends, while House of Cards star Michael Kelly tells you to get back to work. BoJack Horseman is under the impression that binging means drinking, so he’s got you covered there.

But if you are being a responsible adult (after your last game of Google Maps Pac-Man, you swear!) and don’t actually have time to binge-watch your way to a PSA, you can still view them all by searching “binge responsibly” on Netflix to access all 13 PSAs.

If watching (and probably ignoring) PSAs urging you to eat real food, go to sleep, do your homework, or shower doesn’t do it, you could just check out the newest selection of films available from Redbox. Although fake, the pet-themed games and movies probably would have been a lot better than the originals.

Update 3:17pm CT: In other Netflix news today, TorrentFreak reported that the streaming giant was prepping a “free tier” of services, born out of a Popcorn Time acquisition. Sorry, folks: That one ain’t real either.

SNL's Sasheer Zamata stars in must-see webseries, 'Pursuit of Sexiness'

You likely know Sasheer Zamata (Saturday Night Live) and Nicole Byer (GirlCode) from their hilarious stunts on TV. The talented twosome also happen to be real-life friends, and not long before Zamata was cast on SNL, they created a terrific webseries about friendship, sexiness, and all the hardships of "getting some" while living in New York City.

Lucky for us, Above Average has produced a second season of the series and the premiere debuted on Tuesday. The episode features Byer and Zamata navigating the totally exhausting world of speed-dating. Zamata serves up skeptical side-eye as she entertains less-than-stellar suitors, while Byer only has eyes for her one true love—other people's glasses of red wine.

Want more sexiness? The hilarious first season is also available on YouTube and it's well worth a binge.

Star vlogger GloZell Green signs with Collective Digital Studio

The Collective Digital Studio has recently made some significant additions to its roster of creative partners, and for its most recent deal, it has gone green. The media company that runs a multi-channel network on YouTube has signed vlogger and comedian GloZell Green as its newest partner.

GloZell’s channel, which features her rants, reviews, attempts at challenges, and her many other musings on life, has more than 3.4 million subscribers and has scored nearly 600 million views. In January 2015, she received her biggest assignment yet when she landed an interview with President Obama. During the event, her signature ridiculous style was on full display, and she drew plenty of comments from traditional media outlets.

By partnering with CDS, GloZell will join a network that already includes many of the most popular channels on YouTube. In February, it signed seven new creative partners, including prankster Yousef “fouseyTUBE” Erakat and musician Jon “Paint” Cozart. A few weeks after that announcement, beauty and style influencer Meredith Foster joined the network as well.

CDS has been well known for its ability to secure film and TV opportunities for its partners, and that is a potential goal for the network’s partnership with GloZell. The 52-year-old YouTube star recently landed a role in The Wedding Ringer, a major motion picture starring Kevin Hart. “GloZell’s vivacious personality has mass appeal and has led to her building a strong audience and fan base,” said Dan Weinstein, CDS President, in a release. “We look forward to showcasing her unique and fearless sense of humor to even bigger audiences with new and original content.”

In total, CDS’s 900-plus partner channels score more than a billion total views each month.

Can Stream Con be the VidCon of the East Coast?

$

YouTube fans will have another chance to interact with their favorite creators in person now that a new digital video convention is on the books for the fall.

Scheduled for Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 at the Javits Center in NYC, Stream Con will feature programming for both industry professionals and fans alike. The first day will be entirely industry-focused, while the following two will include a mix of industry- and fan-focused events. The event is a joint effort between LeftField Media and Tubefilter.

“Stream Con NYC is a reflection of rapidly evolving consumer behavior,” said Greg Topalian, President of LeftField Media, in a press release. “Industries are all grappling with how best to connect with a new audience, and Stream Con NYC is where these worlds converge and where the engagement begins.”

Topalian founded New York Comic Con, but he has since branched out to new ventures like Stream Con. Since it’s still in the early stages, no guests have been announced yet, but the organizers boast that stars from a variety of multichannel networks will be revealed in the coming weeks. The price point for Stream Con that of VidCon and other YouTube-based conventions, with fan passes starting at $95 for the full weekend and $195 creator-level passes that mirror VidCon’s new addition of a Creator track. The industry pass starts at $395 and gives access to business-oriented programming as well as all the fan-targeted programming.

“Stream Con NYC brings together the wide range of opportunities facing creators today—all under one roof,” said Tubefilter founder Drew Baldwin in a statement. “Stream Con NYC will be the epicenter of education, engagement and discovery—where creators can connect with their communities face-to-face on their path to becoming the next Streamys icon.”

Stream Con isn’t the only VidCon alternative in the game. Playlist Live, which started in 2011, has now expanded from Orlando to include a second city location each year. In 2014 it hit New York, and this year it’ll swap to Washington, D.C. for an event in September. YouTube’s own fan conventions are finally making headway on North American soil as well. YouTube Fan Fest, which has previously only occurred overseas in international markets like India or Singapore, will touch down on North American soil in Toronto on May 2. There’s also a litany of smaller events and tours like DigiTour, that criss-cross the country yearly to cater to the YouTube devout.

VidCon may remain the mecca, but an East Coast alternative could win over many young fans who can't afford cross-country travel or who just want more opportunities to meet their favorites. YouTube itself recently opened a glossy new YouTube Space in the New York market, with special attention paid to the brands and marketers in the New York scene who are looking to tap into the digital creator space. Stream Con could be the East Coast answer.

Lip-syncing ladies bare it all for a titillating musical medley

SketchShe is back, and the trio is taking on a musical medley in the new backseat lip sync.

Last month the trio wowed with a video of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” filled with copious boob-grabbing, and now they've added some crotch grabbing to the repertoire as well. “Mime Through Time” takes us on a musical journey without leaving the confines of a midsize car.

The women parade across the musical landscape, lip syncing to songs like Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time,” and close out with a topless ode to Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball.”

The women of SketchShe aren’t one-trick ponies with their vehicular lip syncs. They’re also having success with more traditional sketches on their channel, where they command over 100,000 subscribers since their start at the end of December 2014.

HBO buddies up with Sling TV in time for your 'Game of Thrones' watch party

$

HBO continues to spread its distribution wings by adding Sling TV as its latest delivery partner.

Sling TV, currently the largest live/on-demand streaming alternative to cable and satellite, will sell HBO for $15 as an add-on to its $20 “Best of Live TV” package. The HBO content can only be purchased in addition to base Sling service—not as a pure standalone at this time. Sling says the new HBO service will be launched in time for the April 12 season premiere of Game of Thrones.

Time Warner’s HBO continues to slice and dice its service to accommodate cord cutters and eliminate what the industry now calls “cord cheaters.” Cord cheaters, which make up to 20 percent of viewers, share subscriber logins and passwords to avoid paying for service. Adding Sling to the mix puts HBO’s non-cable/satellite service in three buckets: HBO Now, which Apple has secured a three-month exclusive for, is a standalone app for Apple TV and iOS devices; HBO Go, a streaming app that is available to provide TV everywhere service for existing cable and satellite subscribers; and Sling’s version, which is essentially one live broadcast channel (HBO has vertical channels called Signature, Family, Comedy, etc.) and access to the library of on-demand movies and original programs.

To make matters a bit more complicated, Dish—Sling TV’s parent company—has acquired the option to sell the new HBO Now service at some unspecified time. When HBO says TV everywhere, it means it.

John Legend will sing to dogs for charity

This video clip of John Legend singing "All of Me" at a pair of bulldogs may have been released on April Fools' Day, but it's no joke.

With a small charity donation, you can enter for a chance to have Legend sing at your private event. That includes, but is not limited to, dog weddings. The Academy Award-winning songwriter taped himself crooning to his own dogs in a hilarious clip to promote his charity raffle for the Show Me campaign, an education effort spearheaded by Legend to combat poverty and, specifically, help rebuild the former South High School into a community center. Raffle entrants have the chance to win a private concert from Legend at any personal event of their choosing.

The kicker? When supermodel and wife Chrissy Teigen catches Legend in the act, her shock fades pretty quickly. She just wants to put on a cute dress and join in the fun.

The campaign kicked off in February, and donations are open until April 15. Those with especially deep pockets can guarantee a meeting with the Grammy winner by shelling out $25,000 up front. Otherwise, raffle entries are only $10 for 100 entries.

4 must-watch series from the LA Webfest

$
0
0

Entering its sixth year, the LA Webfest is considered by those in the webseries world the place to be seen and, more importantly from a business perspective, the place to showcase your videos.

Held April 2-5, the webseries festival is a mashup of panels, parties, and screenings. And awards—lots and lots of awards. Anyone who claims he entered a series for competition at the prestigious event for free hors d'oeuvres and a few attaboys from peers is kidding. Recognition of the industry’s best series, actors, writers, and directors is what this annual gathering is all about.

As the webseries world evolves, those who produce or fund this new breed of content look to Web festivals as a way to get exposure, funding for additional episodes, or, best yet, the greenlight from a studio or network for inclusion in its lineup. There also are cases where a webseries or particular actor catches the eye of TV of film execs, leading to starring roles in new network programs or feature films.

LA Webfest 2015 features 14 series competing for best drama. While they generally are of superior quality in terms of production, writing, and acting, there are a handful of standouts that are worth the cost for the chance not only to screen these webisodes in person but to meet the folks whose hard work is represented. If a trip to California is not in your interest or budget, here’s a look at some of the standouts that you can enjoy via YouTube, Vimeo, or other Web channel.

1) Tammi Mac's Bag Lady

I was ready to hit fast forward with boredom after a few seconds, when actress/radio personality Tammi Mac appeared on the small screen as a bag lady in Los Angeles in this heartfelt drama. Things rapidly turned around when the raggedy wanderer encountered a woman on her way to seeing her fiancé after a few days away. Tammi Mac reached out to her with some prophetic words that stopped the woman dead in her tracks, leading to a beautifully acted and carefully written scene where the rather surprised recipient of the bag lady’s words of wisdom accused her beau of cheating. I’ll stop there as not to ruin the great plot twist.

Two of the other bag lady episodes were on par with the pilot, and one was well-acted but confusing in its message. In terms of impact and message, Tammi Mac's Bag Lady is at the top of the drama nominees in this year’s LA Webfest. The series was funded by a 2013 Kickstarter campaign, along with the Houston-native’s one-woman show.

2) Perfect Girl

In many ways, I liked Perfect Girl more than Tammi Mac’s Bag Lady, but I ran into the inverse of the issue as Netflix had with Orange Is the New Black. The Perfect Girl is a dramedy, but it’s more comedy than drama. Whatever the category, this is a clever series that will tug at the heartstrings of anyone who has had a first love.

Stan and Jenny are star-crossed lovers who met in middle school in Singapore. They have drifted in and out of each other’s lives, holding a strong affection all along. As adults they run into each other at the same apartment complex, with each secretly wanting the other to boldly make a romantic gesture. Yes, a simple plot, but Stan is a mathematician who has to analyze and justify every move until it leads to romantic paralysis. The Perfect Girl is far better than most every lame sitcom on television, and every episode leaves you wondering what will happen next.

3) Quella Sporca Sacca Nera (The Dirty Black Bag)

Anyone who has seen Clint Eastwood’s skein of spaghetti Westerns made under the direction of Sergio Leone, knows the antihero drifter the man with no name. This gory Italian webseries is an homage to those ’60s films, done with great cinematography and just the right underdone of looming menace. The plot involves a hard-hearted bounty hunter, Red Bill, who is in search of two bandits, and he aims not only to catch them, but to return with their heads.

The plot meanders a bit, but it evokes the quiet terror of a man who is willing to not only kill but behead anyone who stands in his way on his brutal mission. The dialogue is in Italian, so be sure to turn your caption translations on in YouTube.

4) Elba

I am on the fence about this foreign import to the LA Webfest. Visually stunning, this webseries is a modern-day fantasy that takes place on the island of Elba, the refuge to which Napoleon was exiled in 1814. The plot involves two competing tour guides who encounter a magical medallion that once belonged to… well, you guessed it—Napoleon. The tension that leads up to the discovery, and some of the action that follows, is cute (again, this is more comedy than drama) but things bog down with all the phony time travel, where one of our main characters becomes the former French leader.

The film appears to be funded by the tourism board of Elba, and from that perspective, it presents the Tuscan island as a beautiful place to spend a leisurely vacation. If there were a category for best travel brochure, here’s your winner.

Will ‘Furious 7’ bring Paul Walker fans and Vin Diesel the closure they need?

$
0
0

“To live in the hearts we leave behind, is not to die.”

That’s Vin Dieselquoting Thomas Campbell on Facebook, two days after the tragic death of longtime costar and fictive brother, Paul Walker. Diesel’s Fast & Furious counterpart was killed in a car crash late 2013, which cast a dark cloud over the action franchise, and brought an overwhelming sadness to Paul Walker fans worldwide.

Walker’s death resulted in a significant retooling of Furious 7—the latest installment in the series, opening this weekend. Since filming was not yet complete, Walker’s brothers, Cody and Caleb, as well as an additional actor, stood in for him. Director James Wan (The Conjuring) also used a reasonable amount special effects to finish the film. Amid the chaos and wreckage in Furious 7, the film is reported to pay tribute to Walker in its final moments, giving his character, Brian O’Connor, one last ride.

Hopefully this will be enough to bring Vin Diesel, as well as many of Walker’s fans, some sense of closure for their loss.

In the year since Walker’s death, Vin Diesel’s made no secret of his grief, expressing his sadness over Facebook, which is usually his platform for inspirational quotes. The posts range from unbearable sadness to appreciation, suggesting that Diesel has worked through the stages of grief. There’s is no one way to deal with grief. Some people withhold emotion, while others let it all out through public expressions of grief, such as with social media.

While Vin Diesel suffered a very personal loss with Paul Walker’s death, he shared grief with nearly 90 million people. Although 90 million individuals probably didn’t collectively mourn Paul Walker, Diesel still reached out to form a support system among his fans. Celebrities, in particular, are so present in public consciousness that when one dies, fans who have never met them can feel that sense of loss; maybe they’ve identified with a particular body of work or just simply feel like they’ve gotten to know them throughout their public careers. When fans can share that grief with a star like Vin Diesel, who had a close, personal relationship with the deceased, they are able to navigate through the stages of grief without feeling isolated.

In addition to the public sense of loss, losing an actor during the production of a film or TV show puts pressure on the producers to complete the project (there’s still money on the line, after all) while also, in some way, paying their respects—either through a simple dedication or with a full-on tribute, as is the case with Furious 7.

Following the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman, Hunger Games: Mockingjay director Francis Lawrence reportedly did not use CGI to complete the late actor’s scenes in the two movies. Hoffman had completed the majority of his scenes before his death last year. Lawrence, instead, distributed his lines to different characters in two scenes in each movie. Mockingjay Part 1 is dedicated to Hoffman; there’s no special send-off for his character—not yet, at least. Mockingjay Part 2 is set for release this fall.

Saying farewell to a deceased actor and the role they play is much more common in television, as audiences grow more acquainted with the character and may require some sense of closure in the aftermath of their death. Most recently, the cast and crew of The Big Bang Theoryshared their grief in a touching toast after the passing of Carol Ann Susi, who was the voice of Howard Wolowitz’s mom. Previously, Gleepaid musical tribute to Cory Monteith, who died unexpectedly in summer 2013. The episode, titled “The Quarterback,” focused on the death of Monteith through his character, Finn (whose death is not explained), and how his friends are dealing with their loss. Similarly, John Ritter was memorialized after his 2003 death during the filming of 8 Simple Rules on ABC. Phil Hartman also left a major void in NBC’s Newsradio after his 1998 murder.

I’m going to see Furious 7 this weekend ready to have my heartstrings pulled.

As an audience, however, we become spectators of grief. “There is something very poignant and very captivating about reading or hearing about somebody else’s loss, but this trend also shows the level of public expression that grief has reached today,” says Ruth Davis Konigsberg, author of The Truth About Grief. Indeed, with social media and the resulting “share everything” culture, we can’t help but witness the grief of others. And when a celebrity dies, somebody everyone feels like they know, that spectatorship is magnified but also demands participation.

I’m going to see Furious 7 this weekend ready to have my heartstrings pulled (and pumped with adrenaline). I was never the biggest Paul Walker fan until Fast Five—the film that catapulted the franchise to the top of my favorites list—yet I can’t imagine the series, Tokyo Drift notwithstanding, without him. But with Vin Diesel teasing an eighth Fast & Furious, we will find out soon enough.

It feels like Diesel has found closure through his grieving process—paying the ultimate tribute to Walker by naming his newborn Pauline. His Facebook posts are less mournful, and, in fact, seem celebratory of Furious 7’s release, of Paul Walker’s life.

Speaking to the fans who mourned with him, Diesel promises, “I know together, we have made Pablo proud.”

Rihanna gives prankster Jimmy Kimmel an April Fools' scare

Jimmy Kimmel has finally had the pranking tables turned on him.

Usually the one pulling the wool over the Internet’s collective eyes, he got a literal wakeup call in the form of Rihanna, who wanted to get him good. Showing up in the middle of the night the day she was scheduled to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live, she had plenty of help from a film crew and Kimmel’s wife, Molly McNearney, who gleefully let the singer into their home.

He’s groggy but in good spirits afterwards, which is about as good a reaction as you can hope for, as he admits defeat. But almost a day later, he’s still curious about why the “bitch” in Rihanna’s new song owes her money.

The next step after dominating the world of YouTube? Become the next big media mogul.

While the ranks of YouTube stars continue to swell, some digital creators are finding ways to expand their brand in true Oprah fashion, branching out to multiple media platforms. We teamed up with ET Online to look at seven young standouts poised to be the next big thing on the media landscape. Hurry: You still have a chance to become a fan at the relative ground floor.

1) Michelle Phan

As one of the queens of YouTube’s beauty scene, Michelle Phan has relied on her 7.5 million subscribers to support her outside projects, including a makeup line for L’Oreal and ipsy, a makeup subscription service and social network. Now she’s started her own multichannel network to create content and feature other budding lifestyle stars. Icon launched with a bang at the end of March, notching 390,000 subscribers in a matter of days.

2) Grace Helbig

Grace Helbig spent years documenting her everyday life online, and now her soon-to-premiere E! talk show marks the first YouTuber-run show on a major channel. Helbig stepped into the space left open after Chelsea Handler’s departure last August, and she’s also poised to be one of the few female voices on late night on any channel. It’s not been a direct path from YouTube to TV for Helbig, who hosted webseries and commercials and starred in small-budget films on her way to E! fame.

3) Tyler Oakley

Oprah has her “The Life You Want” tour; Oakley comes to you in his PJs for the Slumber Party Tour, which recently announced its first international dates. The head of #TeamInternet, Oakley commands an audience of 6.7 million with his upbeat and relatable YouTube updates. He’s recently broken into the podcast space, with his Psychobabble hitting the top of iTunes and getting nominated for several awards. He also follows the Oprah model of using his celebrity for good: For two years running, his dedicated fans have helped raise more $500,000 each year for the Trevor Project, an LGBT organization focused on suicide prevention.

4) Zoe Sugg

Millions of fans flock to Zoe Sugg (aka Zoella) for beauty tips and style hauls on her YouTube channel, but she also produces her own branded cosmetics and has been featured in high-end fashion magazines like Vogue. She recently added a new notch to her belt as a best-selling novelist. Despite drama surrounding her use of a ghost writer, Zoella’s debut novel, Girl Online, outpaced the first attempts of literary heavyweights like J.K. Rowling and E.L. James, thanks to her massive online following.

5) Connor Franta

Formerly one-sixth of the now-disbanded YouTube teen dream collaboration channel Our2ndLife, Connor Franta stepped into his own in the past year. The 22-year-old YouTuber came out on his channel to a whirlwind of support, and then he started branching out and building his personal brand. He’s made waves outside of the YouTube space with various projects, including his Billboard-charting compilation albums of his favorite upcoming musicians and a gourmet coffee line. He’s now planning a tour in Australia with fellow YouTuber Troye Sivan.

6) Jenna Marbles

As YouTube’s top female-helmed channel with 14.8 million subscribers, Jenna Marbles has YouTube in the bag. She’s recently expanded to the radio, hosting a weekly pop and emerging digital music show for SiriusXM. She’s also racked up every accolade possible for a digital star, so expansion to the mainstream is the next destination.

7) Hannah Hart

Hannah Hart has grown from intoxicated cooking show host to an all-around digital star. She released a best-selling book in 2014 that was a combination cookbook and self-help guide based on her massively popular My Drunk Kitchen series on YouTube. She’s also expanded outside the drunk cooking brand, starring in film projects like Camp Takota and the upcoming Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, both with fellow superstar Grace Helbig. Hart’s also a do-gooder, with her Have a Hart days of service rallying “Hartsexuals” nationwide to give back.
