'Danger 5,' 'The Neighbors,' and 5 other comedy series to stream right now

Did you finish Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and immediately wonder what to do until season 2? You're not alone.

I attempted to fill the void by diving into Tommy Wiseau’s new series, The Neighbors, and it subsequently gave me nightmares. So… that’s a good sign? Here are seven comedy series (Wiseau’s included) that you can stream now.

1) Danger 5

This show from Australian creators David Ashby and Dario Russo follows five secret agents as they attempt to go back in time and kill Hitler, and it might be the sexiest revision of that particular chapter in history. There’s a Nazi dinosaur fight. Hitler has a talking dog. The show expertly parodies shoddily dubbed ’60s mod action series, as the spies stumble around the world like an opium-slurred version of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?

When the action happens, Danger 5 really takes off: The fight scenes are gloriously bad, full of semi-erotic grunts and repeated gunshots to the mouth. In a scene between agent Claire (Amanda Simons) and a shady drug dealer in episode 3, he tells her she talks too much and forces flour into her mouth. She then proceeds to shoot him in the dick. The episode titles also double as punk songs (“Fresh Meat for Hitler’s Sex Kitchen,” “Lizard Soldiers of the Third Reich”). The second season began airing in January, but the first season’s on Netflix now, and it will suck you in.

2) The Neighbors

Tommy Wiseau’s The Room is a modern midnight classic, a text to be parodied, deconstructed, and held close to preserve its awfulness. The Neighbors—now streaming on Hulu—appears to be its long-rumored sequel. Be warned: You’ll probably only be able to handle two or three episodes in one sitting.

What is The Neighbors about? As with The Room, no one’s sure; it’s up to us to draw connections. Wiseau plays what appears to be the office manager of a generic apartment complex full of grifters, angry stoners, and possible porn stars (Wiseau also plays the apartment’s resident letterman jacket-wearing creep, Ricky Rick). In each episode we watch their trainwreck interactions, and in case you forget where all this insanity is taking place, you’re reminded roughly every 45 seconds with an exterior shot of a generic apartment building, accompanied by throbbing electronic music.

After a couple of episodes’ worth of screaming, racist and sexist stereotypes, and stunted dialogue, the brain sort of tunes these weirdos out. As with The Room, the apartment is a stand-in for Wiseau’s brain, and it’s a scary place. The “Can I borrow $20?” bit is pretty great, though.

3) No, You Shut Up!

Finally, a show that mocks cable news roundtables by pitting Paul F. Tompkins against a panel of puppets born of the Henson Company. The mission: to discuss “the issues of the day until we get too angry to discuss them further.” The issues of the day, of course, are much more tolerable when argued by a hot dog and a squirrel, and Tompkins is a natural puppet debate moderator. You can catch it on Fusion every Thursday, but season 1’s on YouTube now.

4) F to 7th

Creator Ingrid Jungermann channels all Louis C.K.’s wary anxiety in F to 7th, a webseries about a “homoneurotic” lesbian living in New York City. In season 2, her character endures uncomfortable incest talks with her mom, subconscious-excavating dream sequences starring Olympia Dukakis, and Janeane Garofalo plays a doctor who’s breeding gay fruit flies. Jungermann is currently making a feature film called Women Who Kill, a “lesbian murder mystery based on F to 7th,” according to IMDb, which already sounds amazing. Watch seasons 1 and 2 here.

5) Cop Show

Colin Quinn is starring in a webseries now, and all is right with the world. Cop Show satirizes cop dramas, brand placement (it’s sponsored by Lexus), and the actors who take their roles way too seriously. Jerry Seinfeld, Jim Gaffigan, and Amy Schumer guest star; Schumer and Quinn also star in the upcoming movie Trainwreck as father and daughter, and there are quite a few parallels between the two performances.

6) Last Two People on Earth

Are you now completely invested in the Will Forte comedy Last Man on Earth? This UCB Comedy series jumps on the post-apocalypse trend and asks: What if the last two surviving members of civilization were literally the worst?

7) The Katering Show

Forget every cooking show you've ever seen. Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan are your new food gods.

Jimmy Fallon teams up with his Madame Tussauds wax figures for a song

Jimmy Fallon can’t resist an opportunity to perform, even when it’s with five of his own wax figures.

We've seen enough horror movies to know how this goes all goes down. When an inanimate object shows signs of life, run, don't sing—or else it'll get you in the end. But Fallon just couldn't resist the allure of six-part harmony on the classic song “Barbara Ann” when he ended up with five of the wax figures from Madame Tussauds.

Besides, they sound great without a lick of practice.

It’s wacky, trippy, and almost surely a dream, but there's something eerie about it all the same.

George Lucas promises to make patriotic films in honor of Fox News

Fox News is getting the recognition it deserves from liberal Hollywood after its characteristically balanced, restrained reporting on the unrest in Ferguson, Mo.

Although Fox almost always rushes to judgment, Jon Stewart offered his congratulations to the “whale of a network” anyway. He might have compared Fox News to an actual 18-year-old for its massive ego and tendency to “spend 24 hours a day jerking yourself off,” but in the end, he conceded that Fox's anchors were right: they got something right and they should be praised for it.

Good thing Star Wars creator George Lucas isn't doing all that much lately. Jon Stewart got him to speak for all of Hollywood by promising that he wouldn't make another movie unless it was full of patriotism in a galaxy far, far way. It was Stewart and Lucas' way of showing Fox their appreciation—but of course, they did it as only The Daily Show could.

Lucas' new, Fox-News-approved films could be terrible, but they'd still be hits at the box office. And The Clinton Menace does have a nice ring to it.

Here's why you don't sneak up on Riff Raff during a show

It's been quite a month for rappers getting physical with fans: First Run the Jewels were accosted during a South by Southwest gig, then Action Bronson personally hurled a fan off stage earlier this week. During a recent show, human meme Riff Raff proved no one tip-toes in their Jawwdinz around him.

As Riff Raff posed for some photos during a song, a fan came up behind him and heartily slapped him on the back. A security guard, identified as Burly Boy Kane in the upload, was on it; he dolphin-dives out of nowhere and tosses the man back into the audience like chum.

We're not sure why Riff Raff needs a security guard, what with his new diet, but this really is a beautiful set up and take down. The rapper didn't mention the incident on Twitter, but he did mention his new line of fast food clothing. Hopefully that guy is recovering.

Country fans are convinced the song 'Girl Crush' is about lesbian sex

$

Even though it’s 2015, mankind hasn’t evolved past the following two behaviors: homophobia and wild misinterpretations of song lyrics. Case in point: the song “Girl Crush” by country band Little Big Town, which is being pulled by radio stations because people keep calling in to complain that it’s about a hot lady-on-lady relationship. (Spoiler alert: It is not.)

The tune (which, if you know your musical theater, sounds a little like the Les Miserables song “Stars”; just saying) is a huge hit for the country band and has climbed to No. 17 on the Billboard country music chart. It tells the story of a woman deeply jealous of her ex-boyfriend’s new lover, a theme that’s not exactly virgin territory in country music.

But the lyrics, which include the lines “I wanna taste her lips/Yeah, ’cause they taste like you/I wanna drown myself in a bottle of her perfume” and “I don’t get no sleep/I don’t get no peace/Thinking about her/Under your bedsheets,” are apparently considered subversive enough for country fans to call radio stations and angrily demand that DJs pull the song from the airwaves.

“To my surprise, after explaining the song to more than a handful of people, every one of them responded with basically the same thing (paraphrased): ‘You are just promoting the gay agenda on your station and I am changing the channel and never listening to you ever again!!,’ a music director for a country radio station in Texas wrote on the country blog For the Country Record.

There are a handful of people on Facebook and Twitter echoing that sentiment:

But luckily, most people seem to just enjoy the song for what it is.

Some are even disappointed that it’s not gay enough.

All in all, this is the dumbest lyrical misunderstanding since everyone thought “Purple Haze” was about Jimi Hendrix kissing guys.

The era of 360-degree YouTube music videos has begun

YouTube is promoting the first music video on its site that uses 360-degree video shortly after announcing support for the format.

It took six GoPro cameras to shoot the clip for Dutch artist Noa Neal's "Graffiti," which the panoramic video company Kolor then uploaded to its YouTube channel. Kolor's software is one of the most popular options for stitching together 360-degree video. If you're using Chrome, you can watch the video in all its panoramic glory.

In other browsers, the video appears with the familiar fish-eye panorama effect, absent of all the drag-and-pull technology that 360-degree video touts as a key feature.

While it's still prohibitively expensive for amateur filmmakers to set up a 360-degree film set, YouTube is hoping that these interactive experiences will grow cheaper and more popular as its big-name creators start adopting the technique. Imagine being able to look anywhere in Tyler Oakley or Zoella's space while they vlog.

YouTube announced 360-degree video support in January, and since then, videos shot in that format have begun surfacing on the platform. Facebook announced at F8 that it would soon move into the 360-degree video space.

Fred Durst is not Robert Durst, and he has the hoodie to prove it

Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst tweeted four simple words accompanied by an Instagram link yesterday, directly referencing his being mistaken for real estate mogul (and alleged killer) Robert Durst.

Upon clicking the link, Durst's Twitter followers are treated to an Instagram picture of the man who once sang "Don’t make me have to call a sniper and wipe your brains off my windshield wiper, you dirty bug," standing before them, clad in a custom hoodie that reads "NOT ROBERT."

This might seem like a cheap grab for attention, but Limp Bizkit is still touring the world, currently wrapping up tour dates in Mexico before heading overseas to Europe and Russia.

It's a fun little stunt, as the band is still relevant to plenty.

You won't be able to look away from this Teletubbies–Joy Division mashup

Sure, Teletubbies rival Furbies in terms of dead-eyed, soul-stealing creepiness, but a new mashup video gives that creepiness some context.

YouTube user Christopher G. Brown edited some grainy black-and-white Teletubbies footage with the Joy Division song "Atmosphere," and it syncs up perfectly. Apparently, people on Twitter had recently commented on the similarities between the footage and the song, and Vanyaland posted about the parallels yesterday.

Because the Internet is magic, this creation rose from its slumber to haunt your dreams.

Here's the Joy Division video for contrast:

Good luck thinking about Teletubbies in any other context again.

This is what Ben Stiller's teenage punk band sounds like

Ben Stiller’s on board for the Zoolandersequel. He's got a new TV show in the works. And now his ’80s punk band is getting a new lease

Stiller’s punk band was called Capital Punishment, of course, and its debut album, Roadkill, was recorded in 1982 but never released. It floated into the winds of obscurity, but now indie label Captured Tracks is stepping up and releasing the LP. The group formed in New York City in 1979, which means Stiller was about 14 or 15 when he joined. He was also the drummer, he told Howard Stern on Wednesday.

Adding to the WTF-ness of this endeavor, the band allegedly “consisted of a future Supreme Court Justice for Arizona, a Professor of Slavic Studies, an urban explorer whose family built the Brooklyn Bridge,” and Stiller. The group’s influences, according to Captured Tracks, included Chrome, Brian Eno, and Cabaret Voltaire. Capital Punishment existed in the verdant pastures of NYC’s no wave scene but apparently never played live.

You can listen to one of the album’s plodding, synth-heavy tracks below.

Bulletproof Stockings is crowdfunding its first album and making history

$

Dalia Shusterman and Perl Wolfe, the ladies behind all-female Hasidic rock band Bulletproof Stockings, have known each other just a few short years, but when they speak they share the meaningful glances and nods of lifelong sisters. When I meet them in a Brooklyn café, they greet me with smiles, hugs, and cheerful hellos. Just sentences into our conversation, it becomes evident these women mean business. They’re serious about music, spirituality, and creating spaces for women.

Earlier this month, they launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund their first full-length studio album. The campaign, which ends on April 4, explains that under Jewish law, men are forbidden from listening to the singing voices of women outside of their immediate family. This often results in women lacking opportunities to attend live concerts where they can dance or sing along. But Shusterman and Wolfe are determined to create spaces where girls can rock out.

While the law prohibits men from listening, it doesn’t actually forbid women from singing. So they organized ladies-only concerts for growing crowds at New York venues like Matchless and Arlene’s Grocery.

“As far as we know, we can’t legally stop men from attending our concerts," Wolfe told the Daily Dot. "But so far people have been really supportive of what we’re trying to do."

And with the help of supporters, they’re aiming to go international. “When we met I was like, 'We’re going to play Berlin,'” Shusterman said. “I don’t know why. I’ve never been there but I can just feel it.”

Their shows have attracted fans of diverse ages, backgrounds, and faiths. “It’s really special [at concerts when] there are young women and 66-year-old women side by side," said Wolfe. "It does something special. It breaks down boundaries of how we connect, and also of what [Hasidic] women can do and be."

The two envision expanding Bulletproof Stockings not only by going on tour, but also by creating jobs for women within the Hasidic community. “Women and girls have come to us and said, ‘I feel like I can sing and play music now that I’ve seen you do it,’ or do other things creatively that maybe they thought they had to give up,” Shusterman said.

And while they're passionate about empowering women, they have similar feelings about their music. “We have so many influences,” said Shusterman, citing everything from Bach to Etta James to Radiohead. “We knew we had a different sound so we decided to call it Hasidic rock.”

Their sound is different, but it’s still wildly listenable. Their 2012 EP, Down to the Top, is available on Spotify and full of melodies that are light and soulful. "Vagabond’s Wagon" has the indie-pop dreaminess of Sara Bareilles, while "Easy Pray" sounds like an angsty Hozier ballad.

Bulletproof Stockings released newest single "Mind Clear" on Thursday, exclusively for supporters of the campaign. You can also catch them live this summer at Matchless for the Northside Music Festival on June 11.

Although they won’t turn men away at the door, Wolfe summarized the spirit of their project as something everyone, regardless of faith or gender, should be able to relate to.

“Everyone wants to jump up and down and burst out and sing!" she said."[In temple, I’ve thought], 'How cool would it be for these women to have a mosh pit?' It’s about sisterhood and partying and giving girls an awesome time. It’s not about excluding anyone. It’s about giving.”

Scholastic to release YouTuber Jenn McAllister's 'Really Professional Internet Person'

BY SAM GUTELLE

The latest YouTube star to land her own book deal is Jenn McAllister. The upstart 18-year-old, who releases vlogs on her JennxPenn YouTube channel, has landed a book deal with Scholastic

McAllister’s book will be titled Really Professional Internet Person, and like many of the other literary works published by YouTube stars, it will be autobiographical in nature. McAllister will use everything from top 10 lists to photos to social media posts to catalog her life up to this point. It’s the sort of book McAllister’s subscribers (who are more than 1.8 million in number) will be eager to read.

By publishing McAllister’s book, Scholastic, which caters to young readers, will look to capitalize on the YouTube-to-literature trend led by imprints like Keywords Press. “Jenn has an incredible voice for teens, inspiring them to be authentic while encouraging them to not take everything so seriously,” said Scholastic VP and Publisher Debra Dorfman in a release. “Everyone knows Jenn is passionate about her videos and that same dedication is evident in her new book. We are Jenn ‘followers’ and are so glad she is now part of the Scholastic family.”

Really Professional Internet Person is just one part of McAllister’s plan to expand her presence off YouTube. Since signing a talent management in June 2014, she has also filmed a starring role in Bad Night, a feature announced at Playlist Live.

Rana Zand of Big Frame and Matt Saver of UTA negotiated the Scholastic deal on McAllister’s behalf. The book, which will retail for $14.95, is due out in paperback and ebook formats in September 2015.

The Rock's 10 best Instagram moments

BY CHRIS E. HAYNER

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is headed back to Saturday Night Live to host the March 28 episode—his fourth time taking the job on. While he hasn't appeared on the show since 2009, Johnson's been working hard to keep his comedy skills sharpened. What better place to do that than Instagram?

You may not realize it, but Johnson is one of Instagram's most prolific users, sharing videos and photos on practically a daily basis. While quite a bit of what he shares documents his daily workouts—which are insane and show exactly why he's called The Rock—there's also tons of comedy and fun to be found in his account.

For your viewing pleasure, Zap2it took on the daunting task of going through Johnson's Instagram profile to find these 10 times he absolutely killed it, Instagramming better than probably anybody else could dream of. All he needs to bring to SNL is a fraction of the personality he shows below and he should be golden. (There's a bit of NSFW language in the videos, so beware.)

1) The time basketball player Sun Ming Ming made him feel tiny

2) The time he made beautiful music

3) The time he was an embarrassing dad

4) The time he was Santa Claus

5) The time he didn't care about family heirlooms

6) The time he showed how annoying he can be while you're trying to work

7) The time he threw a guy through the ceiling

8) The time he almost passed out while filming Hercules

Trevor Noah could be the next host of 'The Daily Show'

$

Since Jon Stewartannounced his imminent retirement from The Daily Show's hosting chair earlier this year, fans, including the Daily Dot, have wondered who would be his replacement. According to a report by Variety, one of the names on the shortlist is Trevor Noah.

Variety, which cited a source "familiar with the matter," noted that nothing has yet been set in stone; however, the process of selecting a new host seems to be rolling toward a conclusion.

Noah, a biracial, South Africa-born comedian, joined the show as a correspondent last year.

He may be a relatively new face in the United States, but he has a wealth of hosting experience in his native South Africa. Since first breaking into show business at the age of 18 as a soap opera actor, Noah has hosted a youth radio program, an educational show, a celebrity gossip TV show, a sports show, a dating game show, the South African Film and Television Awards, a reality TV competition, the South African Music Awards, and a late night talk show called Tonight With Trevor Noah.

A number of other obvious in-house candidates have taken themselves out of contention for the job. The husband-and-wife team of Jason Jones and Samantha Bee, who tag-teamed the hosting gig when Stewart was out sick last year, are decamping for their own shows on TBS.

Correspondent Jessica Williams may have had a cameo as the host of The Daily Show circa 2025 in Hot Tub Time Machine 2, but the comedian took herself out of contention with a series of tweets insisting she wasn't a good fit for the role.

John Oliver, who earned rave reviews when he inhabited the host's chair for months while Stewart took a leave of absence to direct the film Rosewater, is off doing his own thing.

Here is Noah's debut segment for The Daily Show:

We can't stop watching this hourlong mix of fans singing along to Chief Keef's 'Faneto'

Chicago rapper Chief Keef posted "Faneto" to YouTube in October. It was kind of a throwaway, reactionary, and angry track. He'd just been the victim of a robbery attempt while on tour in New Jersey, and responded with the visceral, concrete-eviscerating, self-produced anthem "Faneto."

On it, Keef (known unofficially as Sosa) pens the Garden State a love letter: "I’m riding through New York/I’m finna shoot New Jersey up/Tryna take my chain, ain’t goin/We gone come and blow New Jersey up." As rap blog KollegeKid notes, without an adorning music video or a promotional push, "Faneto" struck a viral, resonant tone with listeners—amassing 5.6 million plays.

It's an underground smash hit that rap fans adore. It's been the soundtrack to gaggles of vines, and if there was any doubt of its span, here's an astonishing, hourlong mix of fan clips. It has Snapchats, ample brandishing of guns, people losing their minds in the club, and one very turnt up bird.

You can go back to pairing Kendrick Lamar's fake-ass Aquemini album with cucumber sandwiches now.

Off all the things people have asked for, a dark, gritty take on The Smurfs is not one of them. Luckily, the team at Fox's Animation Domination have answered all of those non-prayers with a look at what the world of everyone's favorite blue mischief makers would be like if it was more like Game of Thrones.

Game of Smurfs is a fake trailer for a Smurfs TV show taken straight from the mind of author George R. R. Martin. According to the voiceover, the show has everything: "Smurf sex, Smurf war, Smurf Red Wedding, Smurfcest, Smurder." (Warning: You'll also see Smurf boobs.)

'Ménage à Trois Radio' straddles the line between raunchy and tender

$

Diana Kolsky and Murf Meyer are real-life lovers with very sexy voices. They’re also the hysterical hosts of a very funny and intimate podcast. Ménage à Trois Radio offers a frank discussion of your “hearts and parts,” and it’s not quite like anything else you’ll find in podcasts today.

Unlike clinical sexperts like Dr. Drew or shock jocks like Howard Stern, Kolsky and Meyer are here neither to fix your love life, nor to shock or provoke you. They simply want to talk candidly, warmly, and humorously about sex—and have fun while doing it. “We’re more like two Adam Carollas and no Dr. Drew,” Meyer told the Daily Dot.

(Fear not, Meyer’s description is silly and self-deprecating: The actual podcast is nowhere near as grating as listening to Adam Carolla’s ramblings.)

Ménage à Trois Radio opens to an invitingly campy slow-jam soundtrack. The sultry voices of Kolsky and Meyer then introduce the show and serve their guest a cocktail of his or her choice. What follows is a unique blend of raunchy, tender, and laugh-’til-you-cry hilarious.

Episode 41, for example, which features Inside Amy Schumer’s Bridget Everett, made me laugh uncontrollably with its uproarious yet empathetic discussion of a man who suffers a rare condition leading him to have over 100 orgasms a day. Meyer muses at the start of the discussion that it doesn’t seem like an unpleasant condition, but as they go on to play audio clips of the man explaining what an ordeal it was to live with it through his father’s funeral, the duo and their guest vacillated between laughter and concerned groans.

What makes Ménage à Trois Radio so listenable is not its fascinating sex stories, though it offers many. What really sets the podcast apart is how Kolsky and Meyer infuse their conversation with interest, care, and a remarkably laid-back vibe. They’re like your coolest babysitter or older cousin morphed into two very likable humans. They know things, they’ve seen things, but they still give you the feeling that they’re out there exploring the strange terrain of sex as if it’s all something fresh and new.

Kolsky and Meyer, who both do voiceover work, met while performing at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York. Soon after meeting they knew they wanted to collaborate creatively. “We both felt like chatting about sex. We’re both very open people, and we’re very open with each other,” said Meyer. “It’s kind of the great equalizer in a way,” added Kolsky. They went on to create a podcast with a variety of guests, from burlesque performers to comedians to musicians. “It helps us to get a more diverse comedic and sexual viewpoint” explained Kolsky. “[Sex is] something everyone can relate to.”

The podcast is delightfully unpretentious and never stuffy. It’s more like a fun grab bag of sex questions and friendly conversation. Segments range from the fascinating factoids to thoughtful advice. “Ripped From the Headlines” is a discussion of current events that are both sensual and scientific, while “Listener Love” fields listener-submitted questions about sex and love. In the playful “Six Sextions” segment, Kolsky and Meyer drill their guest of the hour with a series of rapid-fire sex questions like “Would you rather have one life-partner or 1,000 sexual partners?”

“We’re not trying to preach about anything,” said Meyer. “I don’t think we set out to be like, ‘We’ll teach you about sex,’” added Kolsky. “We’re just saying what we think, and I think people like that.”

Fans of the goofier aspects of the show will enjoy Romance Wranglers, a series of dating personal ad spoofs recently released on Ménage à Trois’s YouTube channel.

If you’re in New York, you can also catch Kolsky and Meyer performing their show live at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater on April 11.

Last night, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson hosted Saturday Night Live for the fourth time, and the Furious 7 star revealed his latest project: a Bambi reboot.

Naturally, this "new Disney movie" is shot like it's part of the Fast and the Furious franchise. Vin Diesel is Thumper, Tyrese Gibson is Flower, and Michelle Rodriguez is Faline, the "girl Bambi." Warning: There are a lot of bad deer puns.

But for real, though: Where can we pick up that Ludacris single?

Good news for fans of mayhem, explosions, and cars with skulls all over them: there are two new teasers for Mad Max: Fury Road.

The latest clip is appropriately titled "Chaos," and gives us another taste of the many, many car chases and lethal fireballs this movie has in store for us.

Judging by the film's Twitter account, Warner Bros. plans to release a new clip every day until the movie comes out. Friday's was titled "War" and runs in a similar vein of, well, explosions. We're sensing a theme already.

Fury Road comes out on May 15, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron. If you want to watch a teaser that lasts longer than 30 seconds, we recommend one of the first twotrailers, both of which look completely bonkers—in the best possible way.

Paramount plans Marvel-style franchise for 'Transformers'

$

0

As part of Hollywood's ongoing effort to abolish originality, Paramount Pictures has announced plans for a "Marvel-style" Transformers franchise.

We're currently up to four Transformers movies from the creative mind of Michael Bay, with a fifth due out in 2016. You might feel that this is already three or four more Transformers movies than anyone needs, but Paramount obviously disagrees. Like every other major studio, they are taking a leaf from the Marvel playbook and launching a multi-spinoff "expanded universe."

Deadline reports that Paramount is negotiating with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman to work alongside Michael Bay, Steven Spielberg, and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to shape the creative direction of the franchise.

Goldsman won a screenwriting Oscar for A Beautiful Mind, but his work on movies like Batman Forever and The Da Vinci Code is more likely to be the goal for Transformers. It sounds like his role will be similar to that of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who has creative control over the Marvel franchise but doesn't actually write any of the movies. If the negotiation are successful, Goldsman's job will be editorial, farming the bulk of the Transformers screenplays to a stable of lesser-known writers.

Despite the introduction of a new creative team, future Transformers movies will probably be very similar to the ones we've already seen. Transformers: Edge of Extinction may score a grim 18 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but it grossed more than a billion dollars worldwide. If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it.
