Season 3 of 'Inside Amy Schumer' claws the eyes out of the male gaze

0
0

In episode 1 of the new season of Inside Amy Schumer, the show’s star comes across Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Patricia Arquette on a hike. They’ve gathered to celebrate Dreyfus’s “last fuckable day,” when the media deems actresses unfuckable and they can finally stop trying to be desirable. They have a funeral for Dreyfus’s looming unfuckability, and Schumer stands in terrified awe of what’s to come for her. The sketch is so funny, you almost forget Schumer’s critiquing a very real, persistent issue. This is the magic of Inside Amy Schumer.

Season 3 of Schumer’s Comedy Central show—which just won a Peabody and got picked up for a fourth season—comes at a time of ubiquity for the comedian. She’s starred in a webseries, hosted the MTV Movie Awards, and is about to release Trainwreck, a movie she wrote and stars in. Schumer’s humor doesn’t resonate with everyone, but with Inside Amy Schumer, she’s managed to elbow out a space where women can do and say whatever they want, and in turn address issues in a way you don’t often see on TV.

Season 2 saw Schumer push boundaries more, tackling body-shaming, slut-shaming, the gender politics of The Newsroom, and awful dating apps (c’mon, you know a M’Lady). In one episode, she explores the plague of rape in the military using the medium of a video game—and manages to make it both funny and infuriating. (Keep in mind this show follows Tosh.0.)

In the new season, Schumer takes aim at sexual assault with a jaw-dropping sketch about a small-town high school football team and magnifies the issue of women’s access to birth control with an ad that shows Schumer asking every man in her life if birth control is “right” for her. She addresses the wage gap by embodying the girl who’s always “cool with it.” She attempts to demystify our cultural obsession with ass while suggesting women own theirs.

There’s a reason Schumer resonates with many women (and men): She drinks, gets high, gets depressed, is freely sexual, talks about body issues, and dissects how women interact with one another. She’s of course dealt with her share of men who don’t think she’s hot enough to be on TV or in films, both online and on her show. In having control of the gaze, she dismantles masculinity on her terms. In episode 3 of the new season, she rips up the fabric of this idea.

The entire episode is devoted to spoofing 12 Angry Men, repurposed as 12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer. The men (Jeff Goldblum, John Hawkes, and Paul Giamatti are among the 12) sit around in a stuffy room, debating whether Schumer is hot enough to be on TV, which is another play on season 2’s “focus group” sketch. It unfolds like a parody of the classic movie, but the actual conversation still takes place in boardrooms and comment sections. During a recent interview at the Tribeca Film Festival, Schumer said they approached Comedy Central with some trepidation about the sketch, but the network ultimately put its trust in her team: “We always come so ready to fight,” she said, “and they’re like, ‘Yeah, you can say pussy. Who cares?’”

Last month at South by Southwest, Schumer stood in a spotlight on stage at the Paramount Theatre after Trainwreck debuted to a packed house. Next to her, director Judd Apatow explained that this movie came to be because he heard Schumer on Howard Stern and thought she needed a platform to tell her story. In Trainwreck, Schumer plays Amy, a writer at a Maxim-esque magazine called S’nuff, who’s freefalling through single life until she meets a guy who makes her want to change (Bill Hader). Sure, that plot is well-tread, but it’s Inside Amy Schumer writ large: the vices, the sex, the body issues. She also explores a complicated relationship with her sister (played by Brie Larson) and ailing dad (Colin Quinn).

After the SXSW debut of Trainwreck, Schumer performed standup to roughly 300 people at Austin, Texas, comedy club Esther’s Follies. She talked about how Trainwreck came to be and how she didn’t think they’d want someone like her to actually star in it: She wasn’t model-thin or attractive enough. (Schumer described her look as a kid as a “jack-o’-lantern with tits” who didn’t lose her teeth until fifth grade but had her period.)

She explained she thought she’d just be behind the scenes with a “messy bun,” but they wanted Schumer to be the star. She just had to stop eating and get a trainer.

“But then I was like, ‘Maybe I don’t need to do anything,’” she said. “They asked me to star in a movie. Am I maybe gorgeous?… But then my stunt double was a guy.”

The great Tilda Swinton, who plays Schumer’s boss in Trainwreck, wrote a poem about her in the new Time 100 issue, explaining, “She’s the one who misses nothing: who buys no bullsh-t, fitted with a radar as keen as a rabbiting spaniel.” There’s been talk about how Inside Amy Schumer is sneakily or subtly feminist. Perhaps that was necessary for it to evolve into what it is in season 3, but now there's nothing subtle about it.

Inside Amy Schumer debuts tonight on Comedy Central, 9:30pm CT.

Of course Waka Flocka Flame announced his presidential campaign on 4/20

Rapper Waka Flocka Flame is a great pitchman. He knows how to sell you on throat drops and blunt rolling, which means he understands health care and job creation. In other words, Waka is a better candidate for president than most of the current yahoos.

It's fitting, then, that Waka announced on Monday that he was running for president. In a video for Rolling Stone, Waka fulfilled a prophecy set forth in the ancient text known as Twitter, circa 2012.

Many current presidential hopefuls have botched their campaign announcements, but Waka's video set the gold standard. As far as policy stances go, he's pro-marijuana and anti-dogs-in-restaurants. He's also got that everyman touch: It looks like he's still rolling his own blunts.

Larry Wilmore challenged Neil deGrasse Tyson to a nerd-off

In a nerdy showdown between Comedy Central’s Larry Wilmore and everyone’s favorite scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson, you might be shocked by who comes out on top.

Wilmore faced Tyson in a “Blerd-Off”—that's a Black Nerd-Off—backstage at his show. While the topics seem right up Tyson’s alley, the actual questions were perhaps weighted more for the talk show host.

OK, so the space questions were about Space Jam, and the math questions were about Los Angeles sports teams. But you’d think Tyson would have at least some pop culture knowledge to take down Wilmore.

Listen to Kurt Cobain's haunting cover of 'And I Love Her'

Montage of Heck director Brett Morgen’s dive into Kurt Cobain’s audiotapes have brought out another gem that nobody previously knew existed.

Cobain once said that he wasn’t a fan of Beatles singer Paul McCartney, but in his research for the documentary on Cobain’s life, Morgen found something that seemed to shatter that: a rough cover of “And I Love Her,” which McCartney wrote and sang the lead vocals on.

“Nobody in Kurt’s life—not his management, wife, bandmates—had ever heard his Beatles thing,” Morgen told Rolling Stone in January. “I found it on a random tape. It’s a Paul song. How’s that for shattering the myth?”

The Cobain documentary will showcase lots of new material from the singer’s archives, but fans got the Beatles song a little early online. The quality is a little shaky, but considering it was recorded decades ago, it still holds up rather well. It’s just Cobain and his guitar giving a Beatles song that doesn’t often get recognition its due.

Montage of Heck premieres on HBO May 4.

Who knew 'Daredevil' and 'Night Court' were soulmates?

Did it take a while for you to get into Netflix’s new Daredevilseries? Was there something… missing? Maybe it just needed a new intro

Yes, the Daredevil series intro is pretty dark and heavy, which doesn’t really help Charlie Cox’s deadpan lawyer-vigilante Matthew Murdock pop. Luckily, someone is already on it. Popped Culture stitched together scenes from Daredevil with the opening credit sequence from ’80s courtroom sitcom Night Court. Murdock is obviously Harry Anderson here.

And here’s the Night Court intro for contrast:

Former college basketball star trolls Erin Andrews two years after her sarcastic tweet

0

Marshall Henderson didn't have to pull a DeMarcus Cousins and wait five long years before extracting his Twitter revenge. In the case of the former Ole Miss basketball star, it only took two years before he could tweet the perfect "gotcha" joke to his former perceived tormentor, TV sports reporter Erin Andrews.

Here's the backstory: Henderson had drug problems during his time in college, failing multiple tests despite becoming one of the best players in the Southeastern Conference. He was, in fact, a good enough player to perform professionally in Italy, Qatar, and Iraq. But the positive drug tests led to suspensions while he was at Ole Miss, and that caught the attention of Andrews, who tweeted this in 2013.

That tweet got the attention of the outspoken Henderson, who immediately put the slight into his memory vault.

Two years later, Henderson was ready to strike when Los Angeles Kings forward Jarret Stoll, who happens to be Andrews' boyfriend, was arrested and charged with cocaine possession late last week, Henderson took to Twitter to make good on his promise.

Is the joke mean-spirited? Absolutely. But the fact that Henderson pulled his stunt in the early-morning hours of 4/20 makes the whole thing, well, kinda perfect.

Toronto Silent Film Festival uses clever Instagram trick to engage millennials

When your medium is the silent film, you have to do something pretty loud to get millennials' attention.

That's why the Toronto Silent Film Festival turned to Instagram and an interactive choose-your-own-adventure game to drum up excitement for a festival featuring vintage films.

The festival's agency, Red Lion Canada, uploaded 15-second bits from several festival projects to Instagram, linking the clips together with hashtags that move people through the action.

In the end, everyone gets his or her own combination of experiences from different silent films, creating a modern-day mashup with the most vintage of videos.

Watch J.J. Abrams and Chewbacca do the Twizzler Challenge

J.J. Abrams and a fuzzball got pretty close to locking lips for a good cause.

Earlier this month, Jimmy Kimmel called out the Force Awakens director and Chewbacca to partake in the Twizzler Challenger to raise autism awareness after Kimmel did the challenge with Rihanna. The Twizzler Challenge essentially recreates the spaghetti scene from Lady and the Tramp but with Twizzlers.

Once the participants have completed the Twizzler Challenge, they can call on two more people to do it as well. It hasn’t caught on quite like the Ice Bucket Challenge just yet, but plenty of people have already done it.

Abrams and Chewbacca finally got a chance to take on the challenge on the Star Wars set. Although they didn’t ask Boba Fett or any of the background characters to help out, they pulled it off with gusto before challenging a famous friend.

It’s for a good cause, but Abrams might be coughing up hairballs for weeks now.

Lindsay Lohan mixes up Arabic words for 'beautiful' and 'donkey' on Instagram

0

Everyone has that moment in their teens when they visit a foreign country, fall in love with it, and become obsessed with the idea of getting a tattoo of a word in that country’s native tongue. (For me, it was Israel, and I wanted to get the word “slicha” on my wrist, which I thought meant “peace” but actually meant “excuse me.” Really dodged a bullet there.)

Apparently, Lindsay Lohan never quite outgrew this tattoo-that-says-“love”-in-Mandarin phase of her globetrotting career: She tried to post the phrase “you’re beautiful” in Arabic on Instagram earlier this week, but a sharp-eyed follower pointed out that the text actually loosely translates to “you’re an ass,” or “you’re a donkey.”

Shockingly, Lohan has since deleted the post. But hey, at least Instagram is less permanent than a tattoo, right?

'Game of Thrones' continues to set piracy records despite HBO Now

0
0

Many Game of Thrones fans who have illegally downloaded episodes of the hit HBO fantasy drama didn't do so to avoid paying, but rather to avoid buying an entire cable subscription just for one channel. They said they would pay and watch it legally if only HBO offered a standalone streaming service.

In response to their pleas, HBO launched HBO Nowjust in time for the premiere of Game of Thrones' fifth season. But while premiere set record ratings, it also shattered piracy records yet again.

According to TorrentFreak, Game of Thrones has been downloaded more than 32 million times in the past week across 18 million IP addresses; more than 13 million of those downloads came from the season premiere, “The Wars to Come."

The 32-million-downloads figure also includes the leaked episodes. On top of everything else, HBO also has to contend with people illegally streaming the show on Periscope.

More than 10 percent of all recent downloads came from the U.S., but Australia continued to show high piracy rates, with 32 percent of Australian viewers watching the show through piracy.

Tru Optik, a media intelligence firm that gathered the pirating data, estimated that HBO lost “$44 million in unmonetized demand potential if each of these viewers subscribed to HBO Now for the 3-month duration of GoT Season 5.”

With more people tuning in than ever before, HBO set out to tackle piracy ahead of the season 5 premiere. For the first time, it planned to simulcast new episodes in more than 170 countries. And along with a standard HBO subscription, people could also purchase a subscription to HBO Now. The first month would be free, but after that it would cost $14.99 a month.

Unfortunately, HBO's offerings are limited. Unless you own an Apple TV or an iOS device, have Optimum Broadband or a Sling TV, you’re out of luck right now. HBO Now is similarly unavailable if you live outside the U.S.

HBO is bringing shows like Game of Thrones to more and more people, but not everyone can get in on the action. Given that the show is the talk of the Internet, interested parties will continue to use alternative methods to get their fix.

How Anita Sarkeesian earned her spot on the Time 100 list

0
0

The Daily Dot is celebrating Woman Crush Wednesday, better known as #WCW on Twitter and Instagram, by highlighting female creators on YouTube whose work we admire.

Anita Sarkeesian is changing the world, and no one—especially an army of cowardly Internet trolls—is going to stop her.

The creator of the webseries turned nonprofit Feminist Frequency, Sarkeesian is one of the most controversial creators on YouTube. An avid gamer herself, Sarkeesian’s videos explore the unflattering and sexist representations of women in pop culture, as well as the overwhelming harassment endured by women in the tech and gaming industries. Since starting her channel in 2009, the harassment against Sarkeesian has been relentless, with threats of violence, rape, sexual assault, and death bombarding her social media accounts and YouTube videos every single day. Last year, Sarkeesian was even forced to leave her home after threats exposing her home address were made against her and her family.

But Sarkeesian is not backing down, and neither are her loyal fans.

This past year, Sarkeesian set out to raise $6,000 in order to create a new series called Tropes vs. Women in Video Games. The Kickstarter project raised close to $160,000, showing just how much audiences wanted to see more educational content being made around sexism, homophobia, and racism. The series has since gone on to be a major success, with each video garnering between 800,000 and 2 million views. The topics range from dissecting the damsel in distress trope to discussing the danger of turning violence against women into a sport, and each video is packed with endless amounts of research and diverse examples. The videos are even being used as educational materials in high schools and universities around the country, and this particular series contributed largely to Sarkeesian making the Time 100 list of the most influential people of 2015.

And she deserves every bit of this success.

(Think otherwise? Get the hell out of my article.)

Although her conviction to make the gaming world more inclusive has never wavered, Sarkeesian recently shared at the All About Women 2015 conference that she does grow tired of her life always being under a microscope.

“I’m angry that we live in a society where online harassment is tolerated, accepted, and excused. … I’m angry that I am expected to accept online harassment at the price of being a woman with an opinion,” Sarkeesian said. “Women who persevere and retain some measure of their humanity are not expressing weakness; they’re demonstrating courage.”

Sarkeesian’s courage in the face of adversity is not only inspirational but has also become an example for women to look to during their own moments of doubt. Her conviction to breaking the silence around the misogyny in the gaming world has made her highly regarded as a media critic and given her the opportunity to host her own TEDx talk as well as speak at universities and conventions around the world. But in my opinion, Wil Wheaton puts it best in the profile he wrote for Time on Sarkeesian:

“A lesser person may throw up her hands and unplug her game console, but Anita is determined to ensure that video games are inclusive and representative of everyone who plays them. As her detractors grow increasingly unhinged, we have proof that her efforts are working.”

So, Anita Sarkeesian, keep moving forward, and know that I, and million of others, are right behind you.

Blake Lively dominates Jimmy Fallon in 'Say Anything'

0
0

Someone finally got Jimmy Fallon to keep his mouth shut.

It was all for the good of the game, of course. He and Blake Lively were playing “Say Anything,” a game that originated on YouTube from stars like Grace Helbig and Miranda Sings, in which they have to say random words or phrases at each other. Whoever repeats or stumbles has to wear tape on their face as punishment.

Fallon usually has the upper hand against his celebrity matchups, but here he is clearly outmatched. For once, the fact that he can’t keep a straight face directly correlates to how well he does in the game. And considering he’s getting compared to the Gimp in Pulp Fiction, it says a lot about his skills at randomly spouting out words.

How women in Hollywood are fighting wage and gender inequality

0
0

It’s no secret that women make less money than men do for the same jobs. It's also no secret that they routinely get passed over for high-ranking job opportunities. Even the glamorous and beautiful women of show biz feel this disparity, so they decided to fight against it by forming The Make It Fair Project.

Rita Wilson, Mamie Gummer and other well-known actors and directors from stage and screen teamed up to create a video for the project, satirizing the struggles of men in the entertainment industry.

“In the past few years, only 93 percent of popular films were directed by men and only 80 percent were written by them,” the women say in the video.

“Sadly, only 70 percent of speaking roles were given to men.”

There’s even a “We Are the World”-type anthem at the end, which is sure to become a misandrist anthem for this generation.

Despite the facetious tone of the video, #MakeItFair is actually a serious campaign for gender equality in the film industry. On Facebook, the women describe the cause as "a call for gender equality in the stories we tell, the wages we earn, and the future we shape. The goal is vast and so, as artists, the women behind #makeitfair decided to do what they do best: create."

The page also states: "As #makeitfair moves forward, the women involved will continue to raise awareness, ask tough questions, celebrate female talent, connect female artists to opportunities, laugh, create, and broaden the scope of the stories being told."

If Rita Wilson can't make men listen, then who can?

Robert Downey Jr. walked out of the most awkward interview ever

0
0

You don’t mess with Iron Man.

One journalist learned this the hard way, when Robert Downey Jr. cut a promotional interview with Channel 4 News in the U.K. short after the interviewer began turning questions toward Downey’s political affiliations and history with drinking and drug use. At that, Downey Jr. cut the interview short.

“You seem OK; it’s just getting a little Diane Sawyer,” the actor quipped as he left the room.

The questions came five minutes into a seven-minute clip from a junket for the new Avengers film. In situations like these, press are often asked to focus only on the promotional item at hand—in this case, the new film. When the questions took a turn from the promotional path, you can see Downey Jr. looking off camera, presumably to a publicist, who eventually cuts off the interview.

After Channel 4 uploaded the clip to YouTube and Krishnan Guru-Murthy, the news presenter in the clip, tweeted it out, he’s been defending his line of questioning, pointing out that Channel 4 doesn’t do puff pieces, that they’d told the publicist they wanted to talk about “the movie and his life” beforehand, and that a piece simply about the Avengers “wouldn't make @Channel4News.”

Guru-Murthy sounds a little less confident of his intentions in the actual interview setting, face-to-face with Downey. Before he walked out, RDJ even pointed this out.

We wonder how long Tony Stark would’ve stayed.

Amy Schumer calls out rape culture in 'Friday Night Lights' parody

0
0

Amy Schumer’s newest season of Inside Amy Schumer returned with its characteristic punch, parodying Friday Night Lights in a sketch that proves there actually is such a thing as a funny rape joke.

In the sketch, there’s a new football coach in town who’s going to shake things up with a great new strategy: no raping. Of course, the players and the townfolk don't take too kindly to his newfangled ideas. Throughout the clip, Amy plays the coaches wife, who’s walking around with increasingly larger glasses of wine.

With all the laughs, the bit also calls out rape culture expertly. When the team is losing the big game, coach pulls them together at the half to explain that football “isn't about rape; it’s about violently dominating anyone who stands between you and what you want.”

Schumer’s Comedy Central show has already been renewed for a fourth season.

Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton will star in Grand Theft Auto drama

0
0

We finally have our leading actors in the Grand Theft Auto television drama.

Variety reports that Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Paxton will be starring in a drama based on the developmental process and legal snafus of Grand Theft Auto. The BBC has picked up the drama which will focus on British designer Sam Houser (Radcliffe) and his legal battles against activist, and now disbarred attorney, Jack Thompson (Paxton).

The battle between Houser and Thompson came to a fever pitch in the early aughts upon the release of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Thompson claimed that the game incentivized kids to plot and commit violent acts. It was a time when it was fairly easy for any kid to walk inside of a gaming store and pick up an M-rated game without question. Many do credit the political drama as the reason why retailers now inform parents of the content found in M-rated games prior to purchase.

So it’s looking like your run-of-the-mill media versus moral police type of story. But Thompson, as a character, should be entertaining to watch. It’s not just video games he’s gone after—unsurprisingly he also made a case against rap music.

Grand Theft Auto should also be an interesting subject. The series has grossed billions in revenue and has pushed over 150 million units worldwide. Grand Theft Auto V was also the fastest media property ever to hit $1 billion, doing so in three days.

Game Changer, the current working title will be written by James Woods and directed by Owen Harris.

Now that John Stamos has confirmed Fuller House, a follow-up to the long-running ABC sitcom Full House, it appears that two more stars of the original series might return.

According to Women's Wear Daily, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen heard the news from Stamos on Jimmy Kimmel Live just like everyone else.

"I guess we're going to talk to the creators and see what’s happening," Mary-Kate told the magazine.

The Olsen twins, now 28, began their careers—and lives, pretty much—playing the Tanners' youngest daughter Michelle on Full House. After the series ended its run in 1995, they went on to further success with movies and a clothing line for young girls.

Fashion has been their career path of choice in recent years; neither Mary-Kate nor Ashley has appeared in anything since the twins' 2004 comedy New York Minute, which featured a cameo appearance by their Full House dad Bob Saget.

Regardless of the Olsens' involvement, Netflix has already ordered thirteen episodes of the series. It will be produced by Stamos and will star original series alumni Candace Cameron, Jodie Sweetin, and Andrea Barber.
